Let the gear checks begin! Even though I won't depart for Nepal for more than two weeks, I started today to organize some of my gear.

I've made it through all of my gear, organized it all in piles, and (I think) bought everything that I will need (thanks, Amazon & REI). I'm sure that I will look at it about 300 more times in the next ten days.
I've also made a couple of significant changes, I bought a new pair of mountaineering boots, my previous pair worked well for several years, but my feet have apparently gotten wider and longer, and they were painful to wear. At REI's garage sale last weekend, I found a pair of Scarpa Mont Blancs, for just $150. They're a little big, but so far we're still friends. This week I also bought a new backpack. I love my Arc'tyrx Bora 75, but it weighs 6 pounds, and while the waist belt is thick and comfy, it's rubs painfully on my hip bones when I wear it with a harness for days. So, today I tried out the Mountain Hardwear Direttissima 50. I like it so far, I think it's a little big for my frame, but for the savings in weight, I can make it work. It's also waterproof - perfect for the PNW, and Manaslu.
In addition to finalizing my gear, I also planned my snacks and electrolytes. In particular, I calculated approximately the number of hours of climbing I will do, and mixed a sufficient amount my favorite exercise drink mix: a combination of Skratch, CarboPro, d-ribose, and l-glutamine. Because of the CarboPro, it's heavy, but I consider the mix to be food, so it's worth in. Plus, I find that if I don't have enough carbs when I'm working hard, my energy drops like a rock.

In the kitchen preparing exercise drink mix unfortunately the champagne won't make the trip! |
